During the holy month of Ramadhan, Muslims all over the world fast from before sunrise until sunset. Fasting is done for approximately 30 days as a part of Allah’s rule, as written in the Holy Quran.
A number of researches have stated that fasting is beneficial for health. Having said that, less information is known about what exactly goes on in one’s body during that period. As cited from Ilmfeed, the writer of the book Eating in Freedom, Tom McGregor, goes deeper into this topic.
First Step Detoxification (Day 1-2)
On the first day of fasting, blood glucose level decreases, heart beat slows down, and blood pressure reduces. These conditions can trigger headache, dizziness, bad mouth odour, and a heavy feeling on the tongue. These are also signs that the detox process is working.
Second Step Detoxification (Day 3-7)
In this step, fat has started breaking down. Skin might feel a bit oilier. Some people may experience acne for a couple of days. On the other hand, the digestive system starts to work better, and all energies are focused on healing and cleansing. White blood cells and immunity improve. A number of people might experience chest tightness, but this is a sign of the lungs clearing up.
Third Step Detoxification (Day 8-15)
On day 8 to 15, one can experience increased energy, clearer mind, and an overall positivity.
Fourth Step Detoxification (Day 16-30)
On one of these days, the tongue will become pinker in color, and breath freshens up. This means the detoxification process is almost done. After fasting for more than 20 days, one will feel emotional balance as well as improved memory and concentration.
