When to Avoid Ketogenic Diet

Ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. By lowering the intake of carbs, it forces ketosis to happen, a state in which the body burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Some dietitians claim that ketogenic diet is the best to reduce fat level. It is also beneficial in prevention of cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, and obesity. Despite the benefits, as cited from MensXP, there are some situations where ketogenic diet can
not work.

  1. You cannot build muscle
Ketogenic diet is not suitable for those of you who want to build muscle mass. Research has shown that this diet inhibits the work of insulin, a hormone responsible for activation of muscle protein synthesis. This results in a disruption in muscle formation.

  2. Obstructs high intensity workouts
High intensity workouts are based on quick burst of energy derived from blood glucose and exists in glycogen stores, provided by carbohydrates. No carbohydrates mean no muscle glycogen, which means the body cannot perform high intensity workouts such as heavy lifts and sprints.

  3. Ketogenic diet is difficult to maintain
The last point is subjective, but maintaining ketogenic diet in a long term is not easy. Carbohydrates are easily available as a source of energy, thus it could be hard sticking to a ketogenic diet. Besides that, ketogenic diet is impractical when it comes to parties or events.
