Narcissistic Personality

Narcissism is a term used to define people who like to praise themselves and are selfish. In the world of psychology, narcissistic personality is a disorder that has a broad spectrum, from mild to severe.

The main characteristics of narcissistic personality disorder are exaggerated feelings of self-importance, an excessive need for admiration, and a lack of empathy. Approximately 50%-75% of the people diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder are male. As quoted from Psychology Today, there are several symptoms indicating people with narcissistic personality disorder:

  • Exaggerating that he/she is a very important and special person
  • Being preoccupied with fantasies of his/her greatness (success, power, beauty, or intelligence)
  • Believing that he/she is special and can be understood only by special persons too
  • Requiring special and constant attention and admiration from others
  • Having unreasonable expectations of treatment from others
  • Taking advantages of others to reach his/her own goals
  • Lacking in empathy and disregarding others' feelings
  • Being envious of other people’s success and believing others envy him/her
  • Arrogant behaviors and attitudes
