Magic mushroom may help to treat depression and alcoholism

In the previous article, we have talked about the health benefits of cannabis/marijuana, which may be considered as a “dangerous” plant for some people due to its psychoactive properties. Recently, some researchers found out that magic mushroom, which is also considered as “dangerous” by some people, may have some health benefits as well.

Magic mushroom is one type of wild fungus that usually grows close to the faeces of livestock such as cattle or buffalo. The fungus contains psilocybin, which is an active compound that can provide euphoric effects and hallucinations. In Indonesia, magic mushroom Is considered as narcotics and is prohibited from being used. Unlike marijuana, which has been approved for use, the magic mushroom has not obtained any approval from FDA (Food and Drug Administration) of the United States.

Despite the no-approval situation, several studies have been conducted to investigate the mushroom and find out whether it has any benefits or not. In a study conducted by Johns Hopkins University, it was found that the psilocybin compound can help a person to stop smoking and reduce his/her level of addiction to alcohol. Psilocybin has also been used as a therapeutic tool to treat depression. Also, this compound is also known to help reduce psychological stress associated with cancer.

Regardless of its benefits, experts stated that psilocybin in magic mushroom could be dangerous if consumed incorrectly. This compound can affect the cardiovascular system, causing an increase in blood pressure and an irregular heartbeat if consumed recklessly. Therefore, the use of magic mushrooms is still questionable, and further research is needed to find the right and safe dosage to use this mushroom as a medicine.
