Consumption of yogurt and fiber helps reduce the risk of lung cancer

Eating is an important part of our life. Each food contains a variety of nutrients that the body can process into energy. This energy is what you use every day to be able to do your activities. Apart from producing energy, food intake also has a role in helping to maintain your overall body health.

Many studies have found that diet plays an important role in determining the risk of various types of diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. In a recent study published in JAMA Oncology, researchers found that your diet can determine your cancer risk, specifically lung cancer. Those who consume a lot of yogurt and fiber have the lowest risk.

In their study, the researchers analysed 1,445,850 adults from the United States, Europe, and Asia. The researchers gathered some of their information including diet, as well as factors that could play a role in lung cancer such as age, ethnicity, education level and smoking history. In analysing diet, the team focused on the amount of prebiotics and probiotics consumed by each participant.

After a follow-up period of 8.6 years, there were 18,882 participants who were known to have lung cancer. The researchers found that those who consumed the highest amount of fiber had a 17% lower risk compared to those who consumed the lowest. In addition, those with the highest yogurt intake had a 19% lower risk compared to those who did not consume it at all. Even in small amounts, yogurt consumption can reduce the risk of lung cancer by up to 15%.
