Benefits of Fasting for Your Lungs

Fasting is often associated with healthier digestive system. The truth is, not only our digestive system becomes healthier, but also our lungs. Prof. Tjandra Yoga Aditama, Professor of Pulmonology and Respiratory System from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, described the benefits of fasting for the health of our respiratory system.

  1. Improvement of lung capacity
Although many studies have shown that there are no differences in both the pulmonary and the respiratory system before and after Ramadan, there’s one study from Arab that shows an improvement of lung capacity after the fasting month. This may be due to weight loss from fasting.
  1. The best time to quit smoking
Smoking is prohibited during fasting, thus the practice of fasting from dawn to sunset is a huge challenge for smokers. We all know how cigarettes are toxic for your lungs. It will be good to continue not smoking after Eid.
  1. Peace in life
Many studies show that fasting brings peace and tranquility in life, which in turn will bring a good effect on both lung and respiratory health.
  1. Reduce the risk of tuberculosis (TB)
An internationally-published research by University of Brawijaya discovers that fasting would strengthen the immune system in facing tuberculosis through the role of macrophages and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Fasting also reduces the risk of getting a tuberculosis infection.
