Unusual Allergy

Being allergic to dust, mites, pollen, or certain food is common. But how about being allergic to water, or even underwear? An allergy expert from Hudson Allergy in New York, Dr. Tim Mainardi, said that there were indeed unusual allergies. As cited from the Fox News, the following are several types of unusual allergies.

Cold Weather

Mainardi said that some people might be allergic to cold weather. The common symptom is itchy skin. This is caused by the release of histamine, which is a chemical compound released by the body as a reaction to allergy. Hands are typically the most vulnerable to this allergen. To treat a cold-weather allergy, it is recommended to take antihistamine.

Exercise

An allergy to exercise sounds strange. However, according to Mainardi, there are people who are allergic to exercise. It usually affects people from age 15 to 45. The allergic reaction include rashes and itches. In fact, it might also lead to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction. “Anyone having allergy to exercise should be very careful on doing any type of strenuous activity”, said Mainardi.

Underwear

Some people may suffer an itchy rash when wearing underwear, as a result of contact with the skin. This is called contact dermatitis. It can be caused by dyes or other chemicals in fabric, such as latex. Those who suffer from this kind of allergy should choose latex-free or organic underwear. Mainardi said that some companies make organic clothing from natural fibres, like cotton.

Water

Allergy to water is a very rare type of allergy. This allergy affects 1 in 250 million people. The exact cause is still unknown. People who are allergic to water will feel itchy when they come in contact with water. However, they may not be allergic to other types of liquid.
