Menstruation Conditions Leading to Risk of Diseases

Every woman experience different menstrual conditions. However, if one of these four symptoms occurs during menstruation, it should not be ignored. Instead, you have to consult your obstetrician immediately.

Excessive amount of menstrual blood (sanitary pads get full every 2 hours)

Usually menstrual blood tends to come out more on the first day until the third day of menstruation period. However, according to Rachel Carlton Abrams, MD, a certified physician and the author of BodyWise: Discovering Your Body's Intelligence for Lifelong Health and Healing, "too much bleeding can be a sign of fibroids (benign tumors in the uterus), hormonal imbalances (too much of estrogen and lack of progesterone), stress (which reduces progesterone), or thyroid dysfunction including blood coagulation disorders."

Dr. Sherry, A. Ross, MD, a women's health expert and the author of She-ology: The Definitive Guide to Women's Intimate Health, added "If the menstruation lasted more than 7 days and you had to change your sanitary pad every 2 hours every day, then this matter should be addressed as serious."

Bright-Red Menstrual Blood

"Too little and bright-red- colored like watermelon juice of menstrual blood may indicate the level of estrogen in the body is too low for building a healthy uterine lining," said Nicole Jardim, a functional nutrition coach. "This condition may lead to irregular menstruation, dry vagina, low sex drive, hair loss or thinning of hair due to low estrogen,"; she continued.

Blood Clots

"Menstrual blood is generally composed of a mixture of blood, vaginal fluids, and uterine lining cells," said Jardim. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, to find small clumps in the early days of menstrual cycle is normal, however if you see clumps every day throughout the menstrual cycle, both in small and large size, that might be a sign of abnormal uterine conditions. Blood clots may be an indicator of endometriosis, polyp blocking the blood flow, fibroids, and many more.

Menstruation lasts more than 7-8 days

"The menstrual cycle that lasts more than eight days is questionable," said gynecologist Dr. Angela Jones, M.D. "By the time the patient experienced it, I would probably recommend some type of treatment, namely ultrasound, to look for the obvious reasons, mostly due to polyps or fibroids, but both can be treated," said Jones.

In conclusion, if you run into some unnatural conditions during menstruation, it is better to immediately consult a gynecologist, especially when you are in the fertile age and wish to have children.
