Health benefits of mint leaves

Mint leaves are often found in desserts as a sweetener or mixed into drinks. With its unique taste, mint leaves are indeed loved by many people. Those who love them that mint leaves can add fresh taste in their foods or drinks.

Besides being used to add flavour, mint leaves are also known to have health benefits. In the past, mint leaves were used as an herbal remedy to treat various types of diseases, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Results of studies showed that peppermint oil could help relieve symptoms of IBS. Mint is known to work by fighting harmful microbes, help muscles to relax, and controlling inflammation.

Another disease that can be treated using mint is the flu. Mint contains menthol, which can break up phlegm so that it is easier to remove. Also, mint leaves are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances called rosmarinic acid. This substance is proven to help reduce symptoms experienced by asthmatics. In addition, the results of studies showed that mint leaves also have anti-allergic properties.

As quoted from Medical News Today, 3.2 grams of mint leaves contain 2.24 calories, 0.12 grams of protein, 0.48 grams of carbohydrates, 0.03 grams of fat, and 0.26 grams of fiber. Mint leaves also contain potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and vitamins C and A.
