Benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in maintaining heart health

The omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that plays a role in maintaining body metabolism. They are not produced by the body, but they can be found in some foods instead. Fish such as salmon, sardines, eels, and tuna are good sources of omega-3. In addition, the fatty acids can also be found in nuts, vegetable oils, and some vegetables such as spinach and broccoli.

Based on its role, omega-3 is divided into three; EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid), and ALA (Alpha-linolenic acid). EPA can help maintain the immune system, reducing inflammation and depression. DHA can help maintain brain development and performance, while ALA is commonly used as an energy source. In general, omega-3 fatty acids play a role in maintaining a healthy heart, brain, and body metabolism.

Previously, it was stated that omega-3 fatty acids could help reduce the risk of accumulation of fat in blood vessels, which can be a major factor in hypertension and coronary heart disease. In a recent study published in Circulation, omega-3 was found to be effective in helping to reduce triglyceride levels in the body. Triglycerides are fats found in the blood that can be produced directly by the liver or from the remaining calories that are not used by the body. The accumulation of triglycerides can increase the risk of stroke or heart attack.

Today, there are two types of drugs that are often prescribed to reduce triglyceride levels, and both of them contain omega-3 EPA and DHA. Research showed that the two drugs had the same positive and effective effects in lowering triglycerides. The researchers found that consumption of 4 grams of one of these drugs every day can reduce triglyceride levels by 20-30%. Normal triglyceride levels can certainly help maintain overall heart health.
