AI Can Predict Death of Patients with Heart Abnormalities

A new Artificial Intelligence (AI) software that can predict a person’s death has been developed by researchers in MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences. This technology is hoped to help doctors in deciding which patient requires immediate attention, thus lowering mortality rate. As cited from India Times, the process involves analyzing through blood test and MRI scan of a beating heart to detect when it is about to fail.

According to the head researcher, Dr Declan O’Regan, the software is able to evaluate the possibility of heart failure and premature death. He also claims that this is a system that can accurately predict how long a patient can probably live and what appropriate treatment can be given to prolong that number.

The results published in the Radiology journal indicates that the software is more accurate and faster at making predictions than doctors. A test was done on 256 patients with heart abnormalities. Their MRI scans were assessed alongside datas of eight years of medical history. It could help predict heart failure and death to an accuracy of up to 80%. Meanwhile, doctors’ accuracy is at around 60%.

It is hoped that this technology can be used to evaluate different forms of heart failure, including cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension, and the treatment required, such as the use of a pacemaker. However, the research team want to run the software through different patients across various hospitals before making it widely available to doctors.
