3 of the best meat substitutes

Meat is a type of food and source of protein that we normally consume. But not everyone can consume meat, especially those who are vegetarian. As the name suggests, vegetarians prefer to get protein from plants (vegetable). As quoted the Medical News Today page, here are some types of food that can be used as a substitute for meat:

  • Tofu
Food made from soybeans is a good source of vegetable protein and contains all the essential amino acids needed by the body. With its mild taste, you can be creative to add flavour to the tofu. One serving of tofu (100 gr) contains 188.4 calories, 20 grams of protein, 11 grams of fat, 868 mg of calcium, and 074 grams of fibre.

  • Tempeh
Also made from soybeans, tempeh has a denser texture than tofu. Because it contains whole soybeans, tempeh is believed to have higher protein and fibre content than tofu. One serving of tempeh (100 gr) contains 319 calories, 33.7 grams of protein, 17.9 grams of fat, and 184 mg of calcium. Tempeh also contains several minerals, such as iron and magnesium, and also a good source of vitamin B-6.

  • Seitan
Seitan is very popular among vegetarians. Originating from Japan, seitan is a food made from wheat gluten. It is made from the dough of wheat flour which is soaked in water to wash away the starch, leaving the chewy part of the dough. This dough has a texture similar to chicken. One portion of seitan (4 ounces) contains 140 calories, 28 grams of protein, and 2 grams of fat.

Besides the three foods above, you can also use other non-meat foods such as beans, lentils, and mushrooms. Those foods contain protein and have a texture similar to meat. Besides being cheaper, those foods are better at maintaining your health.
