10 foods that can help treat inflammation

Inflammation is a form of the body's reaction to an infection caused by fungus, bacteria or viruses. Not only an infection, inflammation can also indicate a more serious disease. There are several ways to help reduce the symptoms of inflammation, one of which is by consuming foods that contain anti-inflammatory properties. As quoted from the Healthline page, here are 10 anti-inflammatory foods that you can use:

  1. Berries. Rich in fibre vitamins and minerals, several types of berries contain antioxidants called anthocyanins. This compound has anti-inflammatory properties which can help treat inflammation.
  2. Fatty fish. Besides being a good source of protein, the omega-3 fatty acids present in fatty fish can also help reduce the risk of inflammation associated with metabolic syndrome, heart disease, kidney disease, and diabetes.
  3. Broccoli. The vegetable is highly nutritious, and it also has anti-inflammatory effects, thanks to the antioxidant content in it called sulforaphane.
  4. Avocados. Classified as one of the superfoods, avocados are rich in potassium, magnesium, fiber, and monounsaturated fats that are good for the heart. Avocados also contain various compounds that are useful in protecting the body against inflammation and reducing the risk of cancer.
  5. Green tea has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) which can reduce inflammation and protect cells from damage.
  6. Chili and paprika are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants which have good anti-inflammatory effects. Paprika contains quercetin which can help reduce the symptoms of inflammatory diseases, while chili peppers contain sinapic acid and ferulic acid.
  7. Mushrooms. Besides being low in calories, mushrooms also contain phenols and other antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation.
  8. Grapes. Like berries, grapes also contain anthocyanins which can reduce symptoms of inflammation in the body. Grapes also contain resveratrol, a plant compound that can also help treat inflammation.
  9. Turmeric. Often used to add flavor in dishes, turmeric contains curcumin compounds, which can help reduce inflammation.
  10. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants that can reduce inflammation. In addition, dark chocolate also contains flavanols which have anti-inflammatory effects.
