Insomnia, or inability to sleep, is the most prevalent sleep disorder in the world. Prolonged insomnia will affect both physical and mental health. There are at least 5 negative effects of insomnia.
Anxiety
Insomnia causes one to be more anxious and restless. Lack of sleep will trigger elevated levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. It will also cause increased heartbeat and blood pressure. This is why stress management is an important factor in management of insomnia.
Anger
According to a sleep expert, Professor Throne, lack of sleep interferes with brain health. A study shows that insomniacs tend to be very sensitive, easily angered by trivial matters. Scientists believe that this happens because sleep directly affects the amygdala, the part of the brain that rules emotion.
Dull Skin
During sleep, our body regenerates new cells, including skin cells. Lack of sleep will disrupt the production collagen, resulting in a dull skin with loss of elasticity.
Increased Appetite
Some scientists have linked insomnia with obesity. It turns out that lack of sleep can cause increased appetite. A study in 2012 proved that lack of sleep increases the level of ghrelin, a hormone associated with appetite. Besides that, insomniacs tend to eat savoury and sweet food.
Concentration Problems
Insomnia also has negative impact to cognitive functions, including difficulty in concentrating. Lack of sleep makes the brain feels sluggish. This will lead to increased risk of accident when driving.
