A healthy lifestyle reduces the risk of dementia

Lifestyle can really determines your overall health condition. A bad lifestyle can certainly worsen your health condition, on the contrary, a good lifestyle can help improve health, both physical and mental. Having a healthy diet and a good lifestyle is one way you can keep yourself away from various diseases.

The statement was strengthened by the results of a recent study conducted by the University of Exeter. They found that a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risk of dementia by 32% in someone who has a high genetic risk of the disease, compared with those who have an unhealthy lifestyle. Not only those who have a high genetic risk, but this benefit can also be felt by those who have a low genetic risk.

In their study, the researchers analysed data on 196,383 adult participants aged 60 years and over who were registered in the UK Biobank. During the 8 years of follow-up, the researchers found 1,769 dementia cases. Researchers grouped them into 3 groups, namely those with high, moderate, and low genetic risk of dementia, by identifying all genetic risk factors associated with Alzheimer's disease.

To find out their lifestyle, the researchers conducted an analysis of reports on diet, physical activity, smoking habit, and patterns of alcohol consumption self-reported by each participant. After that, the researchers grouped participants into 3 categories; those with healthy, moderate, and bad lifestyle. And as a result, the researchers found that a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of dementia in each genetic risk group.
