Urinary tract infection: Definition, symptoms, and treatment

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection on the urinary system such as the kidneys, ureters, bladder, to the urethra. This infection is usually caused by bacteria, one of which is E. coli. Anyone can get this infection, but women are more susceptible to this risk compared to men. The symptoms including pain during urination, darker urine colour, fever, and pain in the pelvis.

In general, UTI can be treated with medications, including antibiotics. Unfortunately,some cases indicate that UTI may recur. Besides, taking antibiotics in the long term is also not good for health. Therefore, many UTI patients turn to herbal medicine with natural ingredients.

As quoted from Healthline, there are five herbal ingredients that you can use to treat  UTI.

  • D-mannose, a type of sugar that is usually contained in apples, cranberries, and oranges. This natural sugar is known to help increase the number of good bacteria in the body that can fight infection-causing bacteria.
  • Urva usi, also known as bearberry leaves, has antimicrobial properties that can help fight infection and reduce inflammation.
  • Garlic contains allicin, an antimicrobial compound that can help overcome various types of infections.
  • Cranberry contains D-mannose and anthocyanin, which can help inhibit the growth of bacteria in the body. This fruit is one of the best choices for overcoming UTI.
  • Green tea is rich in polyphenol, which has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Green tea also contains compounds that act as antibacterial agents to fight infection-causing bacteria.
