Cow's milk is considered by many to be a good drink for the body due to its nutritional content. Its high protein, vitamins, and minerals content make cow's milk one of the healthiest drinks, both for adults and children. Unfortunately, milk or other dairy products are often associated with several types of diseases if consumed in excess.
Milk has been associated with the risk of several types of cancer, such as prostate, lung, ovary, to the breast. The results of a recent study conducted by Loma Linda University researchers further support the association. They found that high milk consumption has a link witha high risk of breast cancer, especially in women. The results of this study have been published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.
The researchers analysed 52,795 women listed in the Adventist Health Study-2 with an average age of 30 years and over. The researchers used a questionnaire to find out information about their eating habits, physical activity levels, alcohol consumption habits, and family health history related to breast cancer. Not only collecting data on cow’s milk intake, the researchers also compared it with soy milk intake. The results of previous studies indicate that soy milk can be associated with a low risk of breast cancer.
During the 7.9 year follow-up period, 1,057 cases of breast cancer were found. Researchers found that 1 cup of cow’s milk per day was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer by 50%, while those who consume 2-3 cups per day have a 70-80% higher risk. Different results were found in those who consumed soy milk. The researchers found no link between soy milk consumption and breast cancer. Researchers also found that soy milk can be used as a substitute for regular milk and reduce the risk of cancer.
