The Benefits of Salmon

Salmon is typically an anadromous fish, meaning it migrates to reproduce. Salmon is born in fresh water, migrates to the ocean, then returns to fresh water to reproduce.

Salmon is considered to be a healthy food, because it has good nutritional values. Eating salmon is good for hair, skin, joints, and brain health. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, and Omega-3. Besides being eaten in fresh form, many companies sell salmon as pills, syrup, or in frozen form.

It is no surprise that salmon is a favorite amongst health experts and enthusiasts, as well as nutritionists. Here are the nutritional benefits of salmon, as cited from India Times.

Omega-3
Omega-3 is an important fatty acid. It helps to keep your joints and skin healthy, lower the risk of heart disease, and support brain development. Numerous researches prove that Omega-3 is vital to cardiovascular health. Omega-3 also prevents hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, arthritis, depression, brain dysfunction, skin anomalies, and some types of cancer.

Protein
Salmon contains protein (essential amino acids) that supports growth and maintains muscle mass. Protein found in salmon helps to keep healthy metabolism and promote weight loss. 100 grams of salmon fillet contain 22-23 grams of protein. A number of researches also say that salmon has small bioactive protein molecules, which support joints, insulin effectiveness, and prevent inflammation in the digestive system.

Vitamin
To maintain a healthy lifestyle, it is important to incorporate salmon in your daily diet, as it is rich in Vitamin B1, B2, B3, and B5. These vitamins are crucial in food to energy conversion, DNA repair, and prevention of inflammation. Other than that, Vitamin B is proven to play a role in maintaining brain and nerve functions. Salmon also has a high level of Vitamin D, which promotes bone and teeth health, not to mention lowers risk of clogged arteries and some types of cancer.

Mineral
Salmon is a good source of minerals, including phosphorus, potassium, and selenium. It contains 10% more potassium compared to banana. This element functions to control your blood pressure and prevents water retention. Meanwhile, phosphorus is important to maintain strong bone and teeth, plus healthy heart and kidney. Finally, selenium fights heart diseases, some types of cancer, and thyroid disease.
