Meat is one of the food ingredients and protein source that we usually consume. Until now, the pros and cons regarding the side effects of consuming meat is still being debated. In general, both red meat and white meat can provide benefits to the body if consumed in reasonable amounts. However, on the contrary, excessive consumption of meat can be bad for health, especially red meat.
Speaking of red meat, many studies have shown that meat can increase the risk of several diseases. In some studies, red meat is known to increase the risk of heart disease to cancer. In a recent study published in the International Journal of Cancer, excessive consumption of red meat increases the risk of breast cancer by 23% compared to those who consume red meat with lower amounts.
In their research, the researchers also compared the risk of cancer for those who consumed white meat (poultry). Surprisingly, the researchers found that those who ate large amounts of white meat had a 15% lower risk of breast cancer compared to those who consumed smaller amounts. The same benefits were also found when those who consumed red meat turned to white meat using the substitution model.
To get these results, the researchers analysed data from 42,012 women with an age range of 35-74 years old. The data includes health history, family history of cancer, lifestyle, diet, and height and weight. Data analysis was carried out for 7.6 years, on average. During this time the researchers found 1,536 cases of breast cancer.
