Six benefits of purple cabbage

Cabbage is often used as food, either processed as a dish or served raw. Most of the cabbage we found is green cabbage. However, have you ever consumed purple cabbage? Same as green cabbage, purple cabbage also contains a number of nutrients and benefits that are good for health. As quoted from Healthline, here are 6 benefits of purple cabbage:

  1. Rich in nutrients. Besides being low in calories, purple cabbage is also rich in nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins (C, K, B6, A) and minerals (iron, calcium, magnesium). One serving of raw purple cabbage (89 gram) contains about 28 calories.
  2. Rich in compounds, such as antioxidants and sulforaphane. Antioxidants are known to have an important role in helping to fight free radicals in the body. According to the results of studies, the amount of antioxidant contained in purple cabbage is 4.5 times higher than that of green cabbage. While sulforaphane is a compound rich in sulfur which is believed to be able to help maintaining heart health and fighting cancer growth.
  3. Helps reduce inflammation.In some studies, purple cabbage was found to help reduce inflammation that occurs in the body and reduce symptoms such as pain and swelling, due to its sulforaphane content which can act as an anti-inflammatory.
  4. Maintaining heart health. Purple cabbage is rich in anthocyanin (flavonoid), which gives a distinctive color to purple cabbage. According to studies, high anthocyanin intake is associated with lower blood pressure and lower risk of heart disease.
  5. Strengthening bones.Purple cabbage is rich in vitamins C and K which have an important role in strengthening and increasing bone density.
  6. Protecting from cancer, thanks to the sulforaphane and anthocyanin content in purple cabbage which has anti-cancer properties, this vegetable can help protect the body from certain cancers, such as breast cancer.
