Alzheimer's disease is a progressive disease, which means its symptoms occur slowly. The main cause of Alzheimer's disease is unclear. However, experts believe that this disease occurs due to a buildup of protein in the brain. Alzheimer's usually occurs in those who are aged 65 years and over and is characterised by a decrease in memory, the ability to think and the change in behaviour.
Until now, experts are still doing research to find out about the exact cause of this disease and what factors can increase the risk. According to the results of a recent study conducted by the University of Bordeaux, diet is one of the factors that can increase the risk of Alzheimer's. A diet of high-sugar snacks, starchy foods, and processed meat can increase the risk. The results of this study have been published in Neurology journal.
In their study, the researchers involved 200 participants with an average age of 78 years and had a history of Alzheimer's and 418 participants of the same average age but did not have a history of the disease. During the follow-up period, the researchers collected data, including the health history of each participant, as well as a questionnaire regarding the diet of each participant.
As a result, researchers found that those who often consumed processed meat and starchy foods such as cookies, cakes, and alcohol had a higher risk of Alzheimer's compared to those who often consumed healthier foods, such as vegetables, fruits, and fresh meat. Researchers explain, it is not the amount of "unhealthy" intake that increases these risks, but the lack of healthy food for the body. Eating whole grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and olive oil is known to be good for health. Besides being able to help maintain weight, blood sugar levels, and cholesterol, these foods are also good for your heart health.
