Negative effects of energy drinks

Most of you may already know about energy drinks. This type of drink is claimed to be able to increase your energy and stamina after consuming it. The contents contained in energy drinks include caffeine, taurine, sugar, and herbal stimulants which can provide a stimulating effect.

Even though it may be able to increase energy, energy drink can also hurt the body if consumed excessively. Most energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine and sugar. If consumed in the long term, this drink can disrupt the body's nutritional balance and causing damage. The high levels of caffeine and sugar in energy drinks can increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

According to the results of a study presented at the 2018 American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions, drinking only one serving energy drink can already reduce the function of the blood vessels by narrowing them. If left alone, this effect will lead to other heart-related diseases.

In the research, the researchers observed 44 young adult participants who were known to have no smoking history. Each participant was asked to consume as many as 24 ounces of energy drinks. After 90 minutes, the participants underwent endothelial function tests to determine the effect of energy drinks on blood vessel function.
