It is a common misconception that everyone experiences the same heart attack symptoms. In fact, there are differences in heart attack symptoms between men and women. More specifically, the heart attack symptoms in women are often mistaken for other diseases. As reported by the American Heart Association (AHA), the symptoms of heart attack in women could be different from men.
The main symptom of heart attack is chest pain, which is experienced by both men and women. However, there are flu-like symptoms related to heart attack that are experienced only by women. Those symptoms are fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping. These are often unrecognised by women as heart attack because they mistake it for something else.
Symptoms of heart attack in men include:
- Pain or pressure sensation in the chest
- Discomfort that spreads from the back, jaw, throat, and arms
- Nausea, heartburn, and heat in the stomach
- Weakness, short breath, and anxiety
- Irregular heart rate
In women, the symptoms of a heart attack is not always a pain in the chest. The symptoms could be:
- Loss of appetite
- Heartburn
- Tiredness and weakness
- Cough
- Irregular heartbeat
These symptomps should not be ignored because the longer the treatment is delayed, the damage to the heart could be more severe.
