Five Tips to Have a Healthier Vision

Eyesight deterioration can be caused by a number of factors, including ageing, metabolic diseases such as diabetes, and accumulation of physical strain. There are a number of ways to maintain eye health—perhaps the best-known one is eating plenty of vegetables, particularly the Vitamin A-rich carrot. Here are some tips you might not have known that can help you to have a healthy vision.

  1. Regular eye check-up
Regular check-up to the eye doctor is the best way to maintain the health of your eyesight. By doing this, any kind of harmful disease to the eye can be diagnosed early and stopped from progressing.

  2. Clean eating
Clean eating is beneficial in maintaining the overall health of your body, including your eyes. Carrot is indeed very good for your eyes, as it contains tons of beta-carotene that can be converted into Vitamin A. Besides carrot, green leafy vegetables such as spinach are also important for eye health, as those contain lutein and zeaxanthin. The two are naturally-occurring carotenoids, important in halting cataract. Last but not least, fruits high in antioxidants, such as grapes, are good for preventing AMD (age-related macular degeneration).

  3. Maintain a normal weight
Keeping your weight in check is also a way to maintain eye health. Overweight people have a higher risk of suffering from systemic disease, most importantly diabetes. Diabetes occurs when the body is unable to produce enough insulin, causing a spike in the level of sugar in the bloodstream. This, in turn, may cause numerous eye diseases, such as blurry vision, cataract, glaucoma, and even blindness.

  4. Sunglasses
Wearing sunglasses is much more than a fashion statement. Sunglasses can protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays, which cause cataract and macular degeneration. Wear a sunglasses that can block 99-100% UVA and UVB rays.

  5. Rest your eyes
For those of you who work constantly in front of the screen, most of the times you forget to periodically rest your eyes, causing fatigue at night. The National Eye Institute suggests a 20-20-20 rule that stipulates you to see an object located at least 20 feet away from you for 20 seconds, for every 20 minutes you spend in front of the screen. This rule has been proven to be able to lessen eye strain.
