Eight foods that people living with arthritis should avoid

Arthritis is a condition in which the joints experience chronic inflammation. This condition can cause pain and damage to joints, bones, and other parts of the body. There are two types of arthritis that are most common;osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Research showed that there are several types of foods that be avoided to help reduce arthritis symptoms. Reporting from the Healthline page, here are eight types of food that people living with arthritis should avoid.

  1. Foods high in sugar
    People with arthritis must limit their daily sugar intake. A high intake of sugars from foods such as candy, soda, and ice cream has been proved to worsen RA symptoms. In addition, consumption of sugary drinks has also been shown to increase the risk of arthritis significantly.
  2. Red meat and processed
    Several studies have shown that red meat and processed products can worsen arthritis symptoms. Both types of intake have been shown to increase the risk of inflammation in the body.
  3. Foods containing gluten
    Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. These foods are known to increase the risk of inflammation in the body. On the other hand, gluten-free foods have been shown to relieve arthritis symptoms.
  4. Ultra-processed foods
    Fast food, cereals, and baked goods are usually high in sugar, preservatives, and other additives that have the potential to cause inflammation in the body and worsen arthritis symptoms. Study results showed that eating ultra-processed foods can increase the risk of RA.
  5. Alcohol
    Intake of alcohol has been shown to worsen arthritis symptoms. In addition, study results also showed that alcohol intake could increase the risk of gout. Also, chronic alcohol intake may increase the risk of OA.
  6. Certain vegetable oils
    It is known that a diet high in omega-6 fats and low in omega-3 can worsen the symptoms of OA and RA. The imbalance has been shown to increase the risk of inflammation in the body.
  7. Foods high in salt
    Avoiding shrimp, canned soup, pizza, cheese, and processed meat has been shown to relieve arthritis symptoms, especially RA. Study results suggested that a diet high in salt can increase the risk of autoimmune diseases such as RA.
  8. Foods high in Advanced glycation end products (AGEs)
    AGEs Is a molecule formed from the reaction between sugar and protein or fat when the food is cooked. Foods that are high in protein and fat contain very high AGEs after they are cooked. When AGEs are high in the body, it can cause oxidative stress and inflammation in the body that increase the risk of arthritis.
