Cystic fibrosis: Definition, symptoms, and the best food to fight it

Cystic fibrosis is a congenital abnormality that can cause damage to the lungs, digestive system to other organs in the body. The disease is usually inherited from parents who have a history of cystic fibrosis to their children.

Cystic fibrosis occurs when there is a gene mutation in a protein that is responsible for regulating the movement of salt in and out of cells. The mutation causes the mucus in the body to become thick and sticky so that it can clog up vital areas of the body. The symptoms of cystic fibrosis including shortness of breath, coughing, slimy, stuffy nose, to acute constipation.

Although it requires special care, people with cystic fibrosis can still do their daily activities. It's just that they need twice the calorie intake compared to people without it, since the body needs more energy to fight existing infections. Patients with cystic fibrosis are encouraged to consume healthy and nutritious food containing carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

Consumption of vegetables and fruit is highly recommended for people with cystic fibrosis. Both are known to be high in antioxidants, antibiotics, fibre, and minerals to help fight and relieve the symptoms of the disease. Adding seafood can also be a good choice. Seafood is famous for its high content of protein. For snacks, beans are the right choice. Besides containing protein and fibre, nuts are also a good source of vitamins and minerals.
