Consumption of sweet beverages can increase the risk of cancer

For those of you who like to drink bottled beverages, of course you already know that those beverages contain high sugar levels, both natural and artificial sweeteners. As we all know, the sweet beverages will have a negative effect if consumed in excess. In the previous article, it was stated that the consumption of beverages with artificial sweeteners is known to be harmful to heart health, especially for those after menopause.

Not only that, sweet beverages can also increase risk of cancer if consumed excessively. According to the results of a recent study published in BMJ, the excessive consumption of sweet beverages is associated with an increased risk of cancer in a person. This was obtained after observing 101,257 adult participants registered in the French NutriNet-Sante.

The participants has an average age of 42 years. Each participant was asked to fill out a questionnaire to find out what foods and beverages they usually consumed with a 9-year follow-up period (2009-2018). Each participant also reported their health conditions that were validated with existing medical records.

The results show that men consumed more sweet beverages than women. During the follow-up, 2,193 cancer cases were found, consisting of 693 breast cancers, 291 prostate cancers, and 166 colorectal cancers. The results of the study showed that an increase of 100ml / day in sweet beverageconsumed was associated with an increase in overall cancer risk by up to 18%. It also increases the risk of breast cancer by 22%.
