Cancer: Definition, factors, and prevention

Cancer is a disease that is characterised by the uncontrolled growth of body tissue cells that turned into cancer cells. Uncontrolled growth does not only damage the main tissue, but can spread to other tissues in the body. This disease has no specific symptoms early in its development. Therefore, it is not uncommon for patients to find out about their condition too late for treatment to be effective.

Basically, cancer occurs when there are genetic mutations in cells that cause these cells to become abnormal. There are several factors that can increase the risk of cancer, such as age, smoking, radiation exposure, obesity, compromised immune system, poor diet and lack of physical activity. Many studies have been conducted to find out how to reduce the risks of cancer.

Reporting from Healthline, the following new guidelinesare issued by the American Cancer Society to help reduce the risk of cancer.

  • Increase physical activity
Adults are encouraged to do physical activity for at least 150-300 minutes for moderate-intensity activities (walking fast, cycling, yoga, or climbing stairs) or 75-150 minutes for heavy- intensity activities (futsal, jogging, swimming, and climbing mountains).
  • Avoid alcohol
To reduce the risk of cancer, you are encouraged to avoid alcoholic drinks as much as possible. For those of you who still want to consume it, try not to consume more than one glass per day for women or two glasses per day for men.
  • Maintain a healthy diet
A healthy diet does play an important role in maintaining overall body health. Intake of foods that are rich in nutrients such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds can help you in maintaining ideal body weight. Limiting your intake of red and processed meat, sugary drinks, and other processed foods can also help reduce the risk of cancer.

Lifestyle does have an important role in maintaining the health of your body. For those active smokers, try to quit. Several studies show that smoking is one of the main factors that cause all types of cancer. Therefore, it is time for you to change your lifestyle for the better. Not only does it prevent cancer, a healthy lifestyle can also prevent other diseases.
