Gastritis: Causes and Treatment

Gastritis is an inflammation of the lining of the stomach. Some factors that can cause the occurrence of gastritis are excessive consumption of alcohol, the use of painkillers for a long period of time, the presence of bacteria Helicobacter pylori, infection, and stress. Untreated gastritis may cause bleeding or even gastric cancer.

There are instances where medical treatment is necessary to treat gastritis. However, many people find they can manage the symptoms at home with simple remedies. As quoted from Medical News Today, here are several tips of home remedies to overcome gastritis:

  1. Consume garlic extract
    Some research suggests that garlic extract can help to reduce the symptoms of gastritis. It is easy to do, just crush 1 raw garlic clove and eat it. If you do not like the taste of raw garlic, you can add sweet jam to mask the garlic flavour.

     

  2. Consume probiotics
    Probiotics can help to improve digestion by introducing good bacteria into the digestive tract in order to stop the spread of H. pylori, gastritis-causing bacteria.

     

  3. Drink green tea
    One study showed that drinking green tea at least once a week can help to reduce the prevalence of H. pylori in the digestive tract.

     

  1. Avoid smoking and overuse of painkillers
    Smoking can damage the stomach lining and increase the risk of developing stomach cancer. Taking too many painkillers (ibuprofen/aspirin) in the long run can also damage the stomach lining and worsen gastritis

     

  1. Reduce stress
    Stress is one of the contributing factors that can make gastritis worse. To help manage the stress level, try massage, meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises.
