Collagen and elastin are the body’s naturally produced proteins, often found in the skin, ligaments, tendon, and bones. Both proteins maintain the skin’s elasticity and strength, replace dead cells in the skin, and prevent osteoporosis. In a healthy condition, skin cells that contain collagen and elastin will appear strong and youthful.
As we get older, collagen and elastin production declines and it could result in the loss of functions of both proteins. To prevent that, there are foods that can escalate collagen and elastin production.
- Foods rich in vitamin C
The body requires vitamin C to synthesise hyaluronic acid, useful in increasing collagen production. Strawberry, lemon, and bell pepper can fulfil your daily vitamin C needs. - Foods containing Lysine
Lysine is an essential amino acid used by the body to build collagen, despite not being produced naturally by the body. To fulfil your Lysine needs consume soybean products that are high in Lysine and low in fat. - Foods containing manganese
According to a research by Oregon State University, the body requires manganese to increase collagen and elastin production, especially in wound healing process. Males need at least 2.3 mg of manganese, with females needing at least 1.8 mg. Consumption of pineapple, seeds, and green vegetables can fulfil the body’s manganese needs. - Aloe vera consumption
Aloe vera is well known for its role in wound healing due to its cell-growth element that stimulates the body’s collagen production. Aloe vera gel can be applied directly to the wounded area or consumed.
